Decade of Action for Road Safety

The Decade of Action for Road Safety calls on all nations to address one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time: road traffic injuries and fatalities. Guyana stands firmly committed to this global movement, recognizing the urgent need to make our roads safer for every citizen. This initiative, guided by the United Nations’ Global Plan for Road Safety, emphasizes the importance of strengthening road infrastructure, enforcing traffic laws, and educating the public on safe road practices. By aligning with these goals, we aim to significantly reduce the number of lives lost and impacted by road traffic accidents.

In Guyana, the government has taken decisive steps to integrate road safety into our national agenda. From upgrading roadways to implementing intelligent traffic management systems and enhancing public transportation, we are addressing the root causes of road accidents. These measures are supported by targeted campaigns aimed at promoting responsible behavior among all road users—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. By fostering a culture of safety and mutual respect on our roads, we are contributing to the broader global objective of safer roads for all.

As we advance through this Decade of Action for Road Safety, every citizen has a role to play. Small actions, like wearing seat belts, adhering to speed limits, and avoiding distractions, can collectively save countless lives. Let us work together to transform our roads into spaces where safety is the norm, not the exception. By prioritizing road safety, we honor the lives lost, protect our communities, and pave the way for a safer, more united Guyana.
